If you are looking for a midsize SUV as your next vehicle, then you have a lot of options available to you, so many that it can quickly feel overwhelming. That is when it helps to narrow down your focus and consider just one or two models at a time, like the 2022 Ford Edge vs 2022 Chevy Blazer. While the Blazer is a fine vehicle with a lot to offer, as soon as you really look at the details of these two SUVs, it becomes clear that it cannot keep up with the Ford Edge. In some instances, this is quite literal as the Edge features two engines, both of which are superior to the two equivalent engines from Chevy.

At first glance, the two engines might seem pretty similar: the Chevy starts with a 2.0L I-4 and has a V6 available, while the Ford Edge starts with a 2.0L I-4 and has a V6 available. In terms of actual power and performance, however, the Edge wins out in every way: offering greater horsepower and torque not only with its standard engine but also with the available V6. On top of this, the Ford Edge is one of few midsize SUVs out there that comes with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) standard on every model. While the Chevy Blazer has AWD available, it comes with Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) standard, so you will have to pay extra for similar performance.

It can be easy to assume that all midsize models are about the same overall size and probably offer the same amount of room inside. In reality, however, there can be big differences between them; the Ford Edge gives you much more room inside for your passengers as well as a lot more cargo space. This makes the Edge a lot easier to load up with your family plus everything you need to take with you, and then hit the road for a long trip. Best of all, the interior features of the Edge are also superior, with a larger infotainment display and much more.

  • Performance

One of the most important things that you should always consider when trying to find the right vehicle is the kind of performance it has to offer. The engine and drivetrain really are the heart of your vehicle, so you want something that will make it fun to drive. With a midsize SUV, like the Ford Edge and Chevy Blazer, this is especially important since these are larger SUV models – compared to a compact or especially a subcompact option. While the Blazer has a couple of decent engines on offer, they fall short of the kind of performance the Edge brings to the table.

    Engine Option Breakdown

To begin with, let us take a look at the engines on both of these models – they each have two engines available, so comparing them is quite simple. The Chevy Blazer starts with a 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine that offers 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is pretty good. By comparison, however, the 2022 Ford Edge starts with a 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 engine that delivers a more-impressive 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. As you can see, this is a pretty significant boost over the power that is available in Chevy’s midsize model.

When we look at available engines for these two models, the story remains very much the same. The Chevy Blazer has an available 3.6L V6 engine, which sounds good on paper, but it only offers 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque; that is a solid boost in horsepower, but it is barely more torque than the standard engine, which is a shame. With the Ford Edge, however, you can get a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers an impressive 355 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. This is not only a huge boost in both horsepower and torque over the standard engine, but it far surpasses anything the Blazer has to offer.

    Why Pay More for AWD?

Not only does the Ford Edge give you two engines that are both more powerful than the Chevy Blazer’s two engines, but it takes things a step further. The Edge is one of few midsize SUVs on the market that comes with AWD standard on every trim. While the Blazer does have AWD available, it comes with FWD standard, which means you have to pay more for a Blazer that has the kind of traction and command of the road that comes standard on the Ford model. When you put this together with more powerful engines, the Ford Edge absolutely comes out on top, and the Blazer falls well behind.

  • Spaciousness

A midsize SUV is the perfect middle way between a smaller compact or subcompact model and a much larger full-size option. For a lot of people, this makes a midsize option the perfect vehicle that gives you the functionality of an SUV without taking over your life the way a larger one might. That being said, you still need to choose a vehicle with plenty of room inside so you can take advantage of everything that this design has to offer.

    Passenger Space

Both the Ford Edge and the Chevy Blazer are midsize models that have seating for five passengers: two up front and three in the rear bench seat. With that in mind, you might guess they have pretty much the same amount of space inside, but the Ford Edge is actually far more spacious. For example, space inside the Chevy Blazer includes:

    • Front Head Room: 39.8 inches
    • Front Leg Room: 41.0 inches
    • Rear Head Room: 38.6 inches
    • Rear Leg Room: 39.6 inches

With the Ford Edge, however, you get quite a bit more space, including:

    • Front Head Room: 40.2 inches
    • Front Leg Room: 42.6 inches
    • Rear Head Room: 40.3 inches
    • Rear Leg Room: 40.6 inches

As you can see, this is quite a significant amount of usable space that you get inside the Edge compared to the Blazer. Overall, the Blazer has just over 107 cu. ft. of total passenger volume, while the Edge gives you nearly 114 cu. ft. of passenger volume to enjoy.

    Cargo Space

This extra room is not limited to passenger space; you also get a lot more room for stuff inside the Ford Edge. In terms of cargo volume, the Ford Edge has the following:

    • Rear Cargo Volume: 39.2 cu.ft.
    • Total Cargo Volume: 73.4 cu.ft.

By comparison, the Chevy Blazer has:

    • Rear Cargo Volume: 30.5 cu.ft.
    • Total Cargo Volume: 64.2 cu.ft.

You can see this is a substantial difference that gives you a lot more space to utilize inside the Ford Edge. When you picture this as three-dimensional space, more than nine cu. ft. is a substantial amount of volume for you to utilize. A large, 48-quart cooler can take up more than three cu. ft. of space, so having triple that much additional volume makes a big difference when packing up for a day of tailgating, a long weekend of camping, or a big road trip.

  • Features

Since most of your time with your vehicle will be spent with you in the cabin, driving and enjoying it, you want to choose a model with great features. The Chevy Blazer is fine, to be honest, but it really lacks some of the advanced tech features that the Ford Edge offers. Perhaps most glaringly lacking is the infotainment system: the Blazer features an 8-inch screen standard, with no option for anything larger. Even worse, a 6-speaker sound system is standard on every trim – even the Premier. To get the available 8-speaker Bose sound system, you have to choose it as an extra option that costs more, even with the highest trim.

    Ford Offers More

By comparison, the 2022 Ford Edge simply gives you a lot more, not only standard but as you look at each trim level that is available. For starters, every Edge model comes with a gorgeous 12-inch infotainment display, which provides you with stunning picture quality that is perfect for streaming audio, keeping track of navigation, and much more. If the Blazer had an option that was close to this, then it might be a bit more even, but Chevy does not even come close.

As you look at higher trims for the Ford Edge, things become even more pronounced. While the Edge starts with a pretty simple 6-speaker sound system – much like the Blazer – higher trims like the Titanium include a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system with a subwoofer. Not only is this more impressive than what is available for the Chevy model, but you get it standard on the highest trim, not as an option. Similarly, the Ford Edge Titanium features a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, while the Blazer tops out with an 8-way power seat.
