The showdown between the 2022 Ford F-150 vs 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is one of performance, capabilities, and durability. The two light-duty trucks may occupy the same space and functionality, but they're vastly different in how they go about delivering the goods for shoppers. The 2022 model year offers some exciting features for drivers looking for a capable full-size pickup from either brand, but in certain categories, one exceeds the other.

Updated for 2022, the refreshed GMC Sierra 1500 focuses on adding more luxury and technology, introducing the all-new Denali Ultimate trim. It has also received infotainment upgrades and the addition of the Super Cruise driver assistance feature. Another new addition for the 2022 model year is the inclusion of the first-ever off-road-themed GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X trim, which is designed to challenge the Ford F-150 Raptor. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is available in eight different trims, including the Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.

For 2022, the Ford F-150 has focused on improving the features and functionalities of its current trim line-up. One of the new additions for the 2022 model year line-up is the Bed Utility package, which features tie-down cleats and brackets, a tailgate step, and LED lighting. A Black Appearance package with black badges, black accents, and black wheels is also available, along with a brand new exterior color in the form of Atlas Blue. You can get the F-150 in a total of eight different trims, including the XL, XLT, Lariat, Tremor, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, and Raptor.

    Sierra 1500 Powertrain Options

There is a selection of different engines available for both the 2022 Ford F-150 and the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Both trucks give you plenty of power and a variety of ways to utilize that potential. However, the F-150 takes the lead in the performance category thanks to having more capable engines available, providing more horsepower and torque than the options for the Sierra 1500.

The GMC Sierra does offer plenty of scalability with its power sources, starting with a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder that makes 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. The four-cylinder pairs up with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Just above that is a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8, which manages 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8, which outputs 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Finally, there's a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged Duramax diesel engine that manages 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The two V8s and the Duramax are all paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

    F-150 Powertrain Options

On the other side of the coin is the F-150 with its five different engines. The standard entry-level power comes from a 3.3-liter V6, which outputs 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Above that is a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, offering turbocharged capabilities and producing 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Moving up the list is the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, which gives you access to 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. If you need even more torque, the EcoBoost 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 delivers 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.5-liter PowerBoost V6 Hybrid gives you turbocharged access to 430 hp and a massive 570 lb-ft of torque.

Both trucks give you lots of different options, but when it comes to high-end horsepower and off-the-line torque, the F-150 is the truck that delivers. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 3.5-liter PowerBoost, in particular, outperform all of the GMC Sierra 1500's powertrain options. So if you want that extra power and performance, the F-150 is the truck you should turn to. Not to mention that all of the F-150's powertrains are paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission, so you have access to smooth shifting and on-demand acceleration that can make the most of the F-150's torque output.

    Sierra 1500 Towing and Payload

Light duty pickups are known for being able to tackle tough towing and hauling tasks. When looking at the 2022 Ford F-150 vs 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, both trucks are capable of impressive towing feats, but only one truck stands above the rest, and it should go without saying that it's the F-150. A lot of this is thanks to how the frame is structured, how the axles are reinforced, and how the suspension is tuned, in addition to having very capable powertrains that allow it to hit its max tow capacity.

The GMC Sierra 1500 attempts to put up a good fight, though. At the low-end of the spectrum, the 2.7-liter four-cylinder offers a tow rating of up to 9,400 lbs, while the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 can manage up to 11,200 lbs worth of towing. The 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 and the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel have the best tow ratings at 13,000 lbs and 13,200 lbs, respectively. The 2022 Sierra 1500 also has a max payload capacity of 2,240 lbs.

    F-150 Towing and Payload

The 2022 Ford F-150 manages to trump the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 at every turn. From the 2.7-liter EcoBoost onward, the F-150 posts higher tow ratings, with the little EcoBoost topping out at 10,100 lbs. The 3.5-liter PowerBoost manages a max tow rating of 12,700 lbs, while the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 can tow up to 13,000 lbs. And the 2022 F-150 doesn't even stop there. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 has a best-in-class max tow rating of 14,000 lbs, giving you a full 800 lbs of additional towing capacity over the GMC Sierra 1500.

If having higher tow ratings wasn't enough, the Ford F-150 also has higher payload ratings than the GMC Sierra 1500. How much better are the payload ratings? Well, the F-150 has a payload rating of up to 1,985 lbs with the base 3.3-liter V6, and things only get better from there. At the top end of the chart, the Coyote V8 tops out at 3,325 lbs worth of payload capacity. This gives you a whole 1,085 lbs worth of additional payload capacity in the F-150 over the Sierra 1500.

    Sierra 1500 AT4X

Performance, towing, and payload may all favor Ford's best-selling pickup when comparing the 2022 Ford F-150 vs 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, but how well does GMC's full-size truck stack up to the F-150 in the off-road arena? The 2022 Sierra 1500 has introduced the AT4X trim for even more extreme off-road traversal in the full-size pickup, but is it enough to challenge class-defining trucks like the F-150 Raptor?

The new AT4X trim includes 18-inch gloss black wheels wearing Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac mud-terrain tires. Multimatic DSSV multi-chamber spool-valve dampers and front and rear electronically locking differentials all help give the Sierra 1500 AT4X the off-road prowess to tackle hills and overcome difficult challenges. A Terrain Mode features one-pedal rock-crawling, while the specially tuned suspension and chassis give you the stability you need for off-road adventures. It also comes with skid plates, a factory lift for 11.1 inches of ground clearance, and an AutoTrac two-speed transfer case.

    F-150 Raptor

The F-150 Raptor is Ford's answer to trucks like the Sierra 1500 AT4X. It comes with a unique rugged exterior, a five-link rear suspension with a Panhard rod, and 24-inch coil springs. With FOX Racing Shox in the front and rear featuring sport-tuned Live Valve electronically controlled damping technology, Ford has managed to stay ahead of the competition. To match the AT4X's one-pedal rock crawling, the F-150 Raptor features one-pedal Trail Control.

With the added two-speed transfer case, locking rear differential, and Torsen front differential, the F-150 Raptor is more than capable of conquering any trail. You can also take advantage of seven selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Off-Road, Baja, and Rock Crawl. This is all topped off with 17-inch wheels and available 37-inch tires for a massive 13.1 inches of ground clearance. With the Raptor's exclusive high-output twin-turbo V6 producing 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque compared to the 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque of the AT4X, Ford's off-road truck is effectively in a different class.
