Finding the right kind of compact SUV means finding the right-priced, right-sized vehicle that comes with the features you want. There are a lot of different crossovers and SUVs out there that may or may not appeal to you, which is why we have comparisons available here as a resource to help you narrow down your choices. The 2022 Ford Escape vs 2022 GMC Terrain is a comparison of two of the more popular compacts in the segment, with the latest model year releases themed around sustaining and elevating the features that drew car shoppers to them in the first place.

For the 2022 Ford Escape, three new color options have been added to the lineup, which include Atlas Blue, Flight Blue, and Iced Blue. The 2022 GMC Terrain has added the AT4 to the lineup, and new special editions have been made available for the SLE and SLT trims. In total, the standard Escape (which is also available in a hybrid plug-in format) comes in four different trims, including the base S, SE, SEL, and the Titanium. The 2022 GMC Terrain is also available in four trims, including the SLE, SLT, AT4, and the Denali. The Terrain’s Elevation Edition is available for the SLE and SLT trims, featuring glossy black exterior detailing, but is that enough to put it ahead of the Ford Escape?

  • Performance

When it comes to performance capabilities, the 2022 Ford Escape vs 2022 GMC Terrain isn't much of a comparison. When looking at the powertrain capabilities of the two compact SUVs, the Escape takes the lead by and far due to its multiple powertrains available across the trim lineup. When it comes to horsepower and torque, you get more of it with the Escape.

    The Escape Engines

Ford's compact SUV is available with either a 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline 3-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque or a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that delivers 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, giving the Escape the right amount of pep in its step when it comes to utilizing the turbocharged revs produced by the EcoBoost engines.

    The Terrain Engine

The entry-level powertrain for the Escape manages to outdo the Terrain in the horsepower department since the Terrain only has one engine option, a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder. It only manages 170 horsepower, so it's weaker than the 1.5-liter EcoBoost. It does outdo Ford's base powertrain in the torque department, managing 203 pound-feet of torque, but it fails to match up to the 2.0-liter EcoBoost, giving up 27% of its torque in comparison.

Both compact SUVs offer all-wheel drive options but come standard in front-wheel drive format, with the exception of the AT4 trim for the Terrain, which is automatically set with all-wheel drive. Both also feature electronically controlled traction and stability management. However, from a raw performance standpoint, you just get more out of the Escape with its options. The Terrain may have a slight edge with a 9-speed automatic transmission, but the power disadvantages and torque disparities make the Escape the clear winner here.

  • Interior

    Space for Passengers

Even if an SUV is considered compact, it's still required to house people comfortably enough without everyone fighting for leg and shoulder space. Even though both manage to seat up to five passengers, much like the performance category, the Escape manages to edge out the Terrain when it comes to interior capacity. This applies for both passengers and cargo.
The GMC Terrain totals 103.2 cubic feet of passenger volume, with up to 40 inches of headroom, 40.9 inches of legroom, and up to 54.4 inches of hip room. The Ford Escape manages up to 40 inches of headroom, with 42.4 inches of legroom, 55.2 inches of hip room, and a total passenger volume of 104 cubic feet of space. The numbers are also similar for the cargo volume.

    Space for Cargo

The GMC Terrain offers up to 63.3 cubic feet of space with the second row folded and 29.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row with the seats up. This is compared to 65.4 cubic feet of total space offered by the Escape with the second row folded and up to 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. No matter how you cut it, the Escape provides more power and more space inside for passengers and cargo alike.

    Comfort Features

As far as comfort is concerned, the 2022 Ford Escape vs 2022 GMC Terrain is a little more even, but the edge still goes to the Escape. With the Terrain, the Denali is the top-end trim that you can go with for luxury, but seating maxes out with an 8-way power driver seat and 6-way power front passenger seat. The Escape, meanwhile, offers up to a 10-way power driver seat and a 6-way power front passenger. The Denali comes with leather-appointed seating, and the Escape also features available leather-appointed seats, but it also comes with ActiveX trimming.

On the climate control front, both vehicles come with dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as power windows and locks. Both compact SUVs are also outfitted with multiple storage compartments, available heated and leather-wrapped steering wheels, as well as anti-theft systems. The Escape, however, comes with available extra interior lighting features, including ambient lights and special panel cluster lighting from Ice Blue. Clearly, in the capacity and comfort department, the 2022 Escape comes out on top in just about every way compared to the 2022 Terrain.

  • Technology

A woman is shown using the back-up camera in a 2022 Ford Escape.

The latest technology made available for the 2022 Ford Escape and 2022 GMC Terrain are highlighted with the upper-end trims for both compact SUVs. This includes wireless charging made available for the Escape's Titanium and Terrain's Denali, respectively. Both also offer Wi-Fi hotspot compatibility for 4G LTE connections, so you can still access the internet even when you aren't near any internet hotspots.

    Safety Technology

On the safety front, the GMC Terrain comes with the GMC Pro Safety suite, which features a lot of standard tech, including the Teen Driver mode, standard Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and available Front and Rear Park Assist. You also have access to a standard HD rear vision camera with the option to upgrade to HD Surround Vision. Hill descent control, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Keep Assist, and OnStar support help round out the Terrain's features.

The Ford Escape, however, comes with the highly sophisticated and equally reliable Ford Co-Pilot360 technology suite. This includes Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, BLIS with Cross-Traffic Alert, and the Lane-Keeping System. Available to get is the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, Lane Centering Assist, and Speed Sign Recognition to maintain speed within the limit. Rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers come standard on the Titanium. Auto High-Beam Headlamps are also standard features, while available Active Park Assist 2.0 makes parallel and perpendicular parking easy.

    Infotainment Tech Suites

The Ford Escape is also powered by the Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system. SYNC 3 includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity, integrated support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as voice-activated functionality and steering-wheel accessible infotainment controls for the 8-inch touchscreen. You can even make hands-free phone calls or send messages without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. The infotainment system is also topped out with the available Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker surround-sound audio suite.

In comparison, the 2022 GMC Terrain comes with an 8-inch diagonal GMC Infotainment System with built-in navigational support. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across the entire trim line, along with SiriusXM Satellite Radio support. An available heads-up display, a diagonal multi-color driver information display screen also come standard, along with voice-activated Bluetooth support, just like the Escape. On the audio side, the Terrain has an available Bose 7-speaker surround sound system to maximize the audio experience within the cabin.

Both compact SUVs come with a lot of the same features. However, you do get a better audio system in the Escape, and it's hard to argue with the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control available with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite. Combined with the fact that the Escape also offers better capacity and performance, it makes it an easy winner in this 2022 Ford Escape vs 2022 GMC Terrain comparison.
