New colors, new features, and new technologies to make towing and trailering more efficient than ever before: that's the general gist of the model year showdown between the 2022 Ford F-250 vs 2022 Ram 2500 HD. Both trucks attempt to win truck enthusiasts over with powerful engines, durable frames, and more towing capacity than what most people would know what to do with. For 2022 you see how further refinements to the offerings have been made, as well as new standard features being implemented to increase the overall value of both trucks.

For the 2022 Ram 2500, it has received a number of alterations to the packages and options, including new equipment packages for the Power Wagon, new appearances packages such as the Limited Black Interior Package, and new exterior packages, including the Silver Edition featuring chrome accents and molds. The biggest new update for the 2022 Ram 2500, however, is the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which adds improved Wi-Fi capability, memory access, load speeds, and tow-specific navigation functionality. The 2022 Ram 2500 is available across six trims, which include the Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Power Wagon, Limited Longhorn, and the Limited.

The 2022 Ford Super Duty F-250 comes roaring onto the scene with all-new colors inside and out, such as the Baja interior color scheme for the Lariat, as well as Navy Pier and Light Slate for the Limited. All of the F-250 trims also have access to the new Atlas Blue exterior color, which joins nine other colors. Heavy-Duty Engines Reside in Both Trucks

Being three-quarter-ton heavy-duty pickups means being powered by some of the toughest, meanest powertrains on the market. Both the F-250 and Ram 2500 come with highly capable engines that put down lots of horsepower and torque within their respective segments in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations. For the Ram 2500, that includes two different options, a 6.4-liter Hemi Apache V8 that puts out 410 horsepower at 429 pound-feet of torque, paired up with an 8-speed automatic transmission, or a 6.7-liter inline 6-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel that outputs 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. The Cummins is matched up with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

By comparison, the three-quarter-ton F-250 manages to soundly beat the Ram 2500 with its three available powertrain options. These include a 6.2-liter Boss V8 that outputs 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The 7.3-liter Godzilla V8 attached to the F-250 easily outdoes the Hemi Apache's capabilities by managing 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque while being attached to a 10-speed automatic transmission. And finally, there is the 6.7-liter turbocharged Power Stroke V8 diesel that manages 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque.

Essentially, the only area in the powertrain line-up where the Ram 2500 competes with the F-250 is between the Hemi and the Boss, where it delivers more horsepower, but even then, it still loses out in raw numbers when it comes to torque. In every other category of powertrain performance, the F-250 completely outclasses the Ram 2500. If you absolutely need more horsepower and more torque for heavy-duty tasks, the F-250 delivers in spades.

  • Capability

The Power to Tow and Haul

Power and performance are important, but capabilities are equally important when it comes to a three-quarter-ton truck, and in the case of the 2022 Ford F-250 vs 2022 Ram 2500 HD, this is another category that clearly favors the F-250. Thanks to the structural design featuring heavy-duty gas shocks, coil spring suspension, and a stabilizer bar, it gives the F-250 a clear edge when it comes to trailering and payload capacity. This isn't to say that the Ram 2500 isn't competitive in this area, but it is to say that the F-250 has a very clear edge over its competitor.

For instance, even with the five-link coil setup with an air-ride suspension, the Ram 2500 tops out with a payload capacity of 4,010 pounds. Impressive numbers, no doubt, but the F-250 tops out with a maximum payload capacity of 4,260 pounds. Even on the lower end of the scale of payload capacity, with the Cummins turbo-diesel, the Ram 2500 manages 3,160 pounds. The F-250, alternatively, with its Power Stroke turbo-diesel, still manages a payload capacity of 3,940 pounds. That's nearly a 20% difference in payload capacity that the F-250's turbo-diesel affords you over the Ram 2500's turbo-diesel.

The story is very similar when it comes to trailering capabilities as well. The Ram 2500's Hemi V8 can tow up to 17,540 pounds. These are great numbers for a three-quarter-ton pickup. In fact, the Hemi V8 does manage a higher towing capacity over the F-250's 6.2-liter Boss V8, which tops out at 15,800 pounds. And in that slight instance, you can see a glimmer of hope for the Ram 2500 fighting back, but that glimmer of hope is swiftly snuffed out by the F-250's more capable powertrain options.

When it comes to the 7.3-liter Godzilla V8, you have a maximum towing and trailering rating of 19,500 pounds, giving you 1,960 additional pounds of trailering capability over the Ram 2500's Hemi. That's approximately 10% additional towing capacity and makes a big difference where it counts in the workplace or on the road. The story is similar to the turbo-diesel options as well. The Ram 2500 manages 20,000 pounds worth of maximum towing with the 6.7-liter Cummins, whereas the F-250's Power Stroke gives you a total of 22,800 pounds of maximum towing capacity. The Ford Super Duty is a clear winner in this category.

Tech That Makes Driving Your Truck a Better Experience

Tech may not seem like the most important component for a heavy-duty, three-quarter-ton pickup, but it makes a huge difference when it comes to trailering efficiency, safety, and stability. Both trucks offer a nice suite of tech, especially for trailering. The Ram 2500, for instance, has available Tow Mode with a digital HD rear-view mirror, an available Trailer 360 View offering a bird's-eye view of the truck and trailer, as well as trailer hitch lights and trailer guidance support.

The F-250 matches the Ram 2500 with the same features and then some. With the all-new Ford SYNC 4 and Ford Co-Pilot360, you have access to some of the best tech available with Ford's Super Duty line of heavy-duty pickups. This includes available adaptive steering, the 360-degree camera view of the truck and trailer, trailer coverage monitors with blind-spot information, pro-trailer backup assist, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision assist, lane assist, and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, you get hill-start assist on all Super Duty trims, no matter which model you go with.

Both trucks also have a great infotainment setup. The Uconnect 5, for instance, provides faster access, more access, and better memory management than ever before, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with tow-specific navigation. Ford's counter to the Ram's Uconnect 5 is the SYNC 4 suite, with wireless connectivity bridging nearly every aspect of the truck's functionality to wireless interaction. This includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, along with voice-activated commands for all essential interactivity functionality, including navigation and app access, thanks to SYNC AppLink support.

While both trucks have very similar infotainment functionality offering HD 12-inch screens and an assortment of app and media functions, Ford's Super Duty steps out ahead in the 2022 Ford F-250 vs 2022 Ram 2500 HD debate with the over-the-air updates. You can easily connect and keep your truck up to date with 24/7 cloud service connectivity that syncs your truck and your smartphone to the latest version of Ford's software. It's a great way to keep your truck fresh with the latest software offerings from Ford. Combined with the power, performance, and capabilities, it's easy to see how the 2022 F-250 easily takes the win over the 2022 Ram 2500 in the match-up.
