2013 F-150 Limited Trim

A decade ago, Ford introduced pickup truck enthusiasts to the highest grade available for the F-150, known as the Limited. The 2013 model year was the second to last model year for the twelfth-generation F-150, so it was a bold move for Ford to introduce an all-new trim shortly before refreshing the nameplate with a new generation and features just a couple of years later. Nevertheless, the Limited sat atop a rather lofty totem pole of trim options for 2013.

You had ten trims available when it came to the trim line-up for that model year, and the Limited was the most upscale of those options. A fancy chrome grille, heated and ventilated front seats with Brick Red leather upholstery, the latest in navigation and infotainment (at the time), and a tailgate step-ladder extension were all par the course for the Limited trim’s debut a decade ago. 2015 F-150 Generational Overhaul

The 2014 model year didn’t offer much in terms of change, except for the introduction of the high-performance Tremor package. There was a complete overhaul of the fascia and all-new features for the infotainment, performance, and trim line-up. The updated infotainment includes an eight-inch touchscreen with new SYNC functionality, navigation, and app support. A 2.7L EcoBoost V6 was added along with a 3.5L V6. The 3.7L V6 and 6.2L V8 were removed, however.

The towing capacity was also increased to 12,200 lbs, up from the previous generation. This change made the thirteenth-generation F-150 a significant upgrade over the outgoing model. The 2016 updates were minimal, but the changes were still rather significant. The SYNC 3 update included improved voice recognition support, enhanced capacitive touchscreen support, and a modernized graphical interface.

In 2017, the F-150 saw further improvements to the powertrain line-up by introducing an improved 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with an additional 10 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque. The new EcoBoost V6 was also joined by the all-new advanced 10-speed automatic transmission, giving the F-150 smoother and more responsive shifting.

2018 F-150 Refresh & Increased Capabilities

For 2018, Ford again increased the overall capabilities of the F-150, upping the total trailering and payload capacity. The 2018 F-150 manages up to 13,200 lbs worth of trailering and 3,270 lbs of payload capacity. These changes were thanks to updates across the board to the F-150’s powertrain capabilities, including more powerful versions of the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 and 5.0L V8 and a new 3.3L V6 base engine. The fourteenth generation includes a lot of changes, including high-strength steel chassis, a visual overhaul with the now iconic C-clamp front lighting array, and a new grille and bumpers. The exterior was also made more aerodynamic with active grille shutters to help with gas mileage. Most significantly, the 2021 model year introduced the all-new 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid system for improved fuel economy and on-road performance. The 2021 F-150 has a maximum trailering capacity of 14,000 lbs and a maximum payload of 3,325 lbs.

More bed functionality with storage and utility was made standard, along with an all-new interior redesign. Fresh material and interior color options were introduced for the 2021 model year, and an all-new infotainment stack was added, featuring an available 12-inch HD touchscreen. This is paired with an all-new 12-inch HD digital driver display cluster. There is also a new fold-out interior work surface for writing, signing documents, or using a laptop.

2022 F-150 Lightning

Ford skipped making any major changes for the 2022 F-150 other than adding some basic appearance packages and discontinuing the 3.0L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V6 halfway through the year. However, the big news for 2022 was the introduction of the F-150 Lightning, the all-electric version of the popular truck. This was a pretty big departure from the typical F-150, but if you are a Shelbyville shopper looking for something different, this is definitely that truck.

The F-150 Lightning includes many stylistic cues from the fourteenth-generation F-150, including LED arrays on the front fascia that mirror the C-clamp design. However, the lights run the entire width of the truck, giving the Lightning its own unique look. The Lightning launched in a total of four different trims, many of which mirrored the standard gas version, going from the Pro all the way up to the Platinum.

2023 F-150 Raptor R & Rattler Packages

The decade of changes for the F-150 culminates with the 2023 model year, featuring even more goodies for truck shoppers. The introduction of the Raptor R and Rattler packages adds two very diverse and unique approaches to the F-150’s off-road capabilities.
