What Hybrid Type Is Right for You?

Hybrids come in two forms: the standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Both engines have their different pros and cons depending on what you need them to do. The standard hybrid utilizes your vehicle's engine to charge the electric battery. These hybrids can use their gas and electric engines separately and together to keep your vehicle going. The benefit of the standard hybrid is they tend to have longer ranges, and there is always a backup energy source if one of them goes out. These are excellent vehicles for anyone who needs to drive long distances and want the reliability of the gasoline engine. The downside of this hybrid is that the electric battery is smaller and less powerful. This is countered by the fact that it's paired with a gasoline engine, which means that the smaller battery doesn’t impact the power too much.

The plug-in hybrid utilizes a larger electric battery and a smaller gasoline engine. These vehicles use less gasoline and more battery to power them. This is great for anyone looking to commute locally and avoid having to fill up constantly. One big benefit of the plug-in hybrid is they can be run entirely on their electric battery. The gasoline engine acts primarily as an emergency backup fuel source for the vehicle, making it incredibly affordable to drive. The downside is that you have to have a place to plug in to charge up that battery. Luckily, this is easily mitigated since many places are installing electric vehicle charging ports, and most homes are made with 120 volts outlets as a standard. So if nothing else, you can always plug in at home!

Ford’s History of Hybrid Vehicles

Hybrids are a relatively new vehicle in terms of when they were introduced, but the plans for electric vehicles have been in the works for almost as long as gasoline engines have been available. While many of Ford's initial attempts to launch an electric vehicle flopped, Ford found a successful transition to electric by manufacturing a hybrid engine. Ford released their first hybrid in 2004 when they released the first-ever hybrid SUV, the 2005 Escape. Despite being Ford’s first real hybrid release on a large scale, the 2005 Escape temporarily took over the automotive industry. The 2005 Escape could get up to 30 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway, which is competitive even by today's standards. The hybrid escape was surprisingly popular, and Ford set themselves a pretty high bar for their next hybrid release.

With the success of the Escape bolstering Ford, they dove further into expanding their hybrid options. They followed the release of the Escape with the 2009 release of the 2010 Fusion hybrid. The 2010 Fusions were another huge success for Ford in the world of hybrid vehicles. They managed up to 41 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway, making it a top performer in fuel efficiency. With the success of their first hybrids, Ford was setting a tough act to follow, even for themselves.

It’s been quite a while since the 2004 release of Ford’s first hybrid, and in 2022 Ford is giving drivers more hybrid options than ever this year. As one of Ford’s first-ever hybrids, we are glad to see that they are continuing to offer the hybrid option in the Escape, even all these years later. The Escapes come in both standard hybrid and plug-in hybrid options for 2022, and we love how that allows drivers the freedom to choose what type of hybrid engine they’re interested in.

The 2022 F-150 is another popular choice, with a hybrid option available. Most trucks aren’t eco-friendly, but the F-150 hybrid options are, and while many would assume this makes the F150 weaker, this is not the case. The Ford F-150 Hybrid destroys those stereotypes and offers an impressive towing capacity of 12,700 lbs, which easily rivals its gas-powered competitors.

Ford also offers a hybrid option for the 2022 Explorer, allowing full-size SUV drivers to enjoy the benefits of the hybrid engine. Pairing a hybrid with all-wheel drive sounds impossible, but Ford has managed to accomplish that for the Explorers. This full-size hybrid SUV is able to offer 27 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway: quite impressive when taking into consideration its large stature.

We Offer an Array of Used Hybrids From Other Brands

Newton Ford South may focus primarily on Ford, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate a good vehicle when we see one. Some of our favorite hybrids come to us used and from other manufacturers. While we are primarily a Ford dealership, used vehicles from a variety of manufacturers are available from us as well. Hybrid vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Honda Accord, and Toyota Prius are all great choices to buy used, and we make an effort to carry a wide variety of used hybrids for our buyers. We like to ensure we’ve got something for every driver interested in a hybrid, which means we have to step outside the Ford name to offer that diversity. Making sure that we have that variety also allows us to fit different budget needs. New isn’t always an option for everyone, and having a large selection of used hybrids allows us to make owning a hybrid vehicle a reality for all customers.
